Your adrenal glands play a central role in your endocrine system when it comes to regulating and reacting to your body’s stress levels. When they are functioning properly, you are able to effectively accommodate and react to the day-to-day stresses that you encounter.
The adrenal glands rest on top of the kidneys, and are in charge of regulating important stress hormones like cortisol, epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine (noradrenaline). It is also has a role in sex hormone synthesis and the balance of minerals in the blood.
The adrenal glands work within a network of other parts of the nervous system, called the HPA Axis – which also includes the Hypothalamus and Pituitary gland in the brain. Without proper regulation, you may feel unable to cope with normal everyday stress or even handle the normal activities of life, as it can contribute to feelings of anxiousness or fatigue.
When your stress response is prolonged, after illness, or if other resources are depleted, the ability to regulate the adrenal glands can be compromised, causing many symptoms. In addition to fatigue or exhaustion, it can also cause muted immune responses, blood sugar issues, nervousness, weight gain, sex hormone imbalance, low libido and sleep disturbance.
Adrenal fatigue is not recognized as an official medical diagnosis, but is a “functional” illness. It is not until a patient reaches the end stage, does it get diagnosed as a serious illness like Addison’s disease, or Cushing’s disease.
Many physicians will overlook the adrenal glands as part of a patients illness. However, at Fusion Natural Health, our practitioners are trained to notice signs of adrenal disfunction and may consider you take a home-test called the Adrenal Stress Index. This test will track your cortisol levels over a 24-hour period and help pinpoint whether the symptoms you’re suffering from are due to compromised adrenal gland function.
